The picture of Ilya Repin captures one of the most brilliant women of the early twentieth century - Maria Fedorovna Andreeva. This woman was a wonderful theater actress, enjoyed great respect in cultural circles. But most importantly, she had a very bright, explosive character. It was the restless temperament of the woman who tried to convey Repin in this work.
In the picture we see a woman in a sitting pose. Her body was rotated three quarters. The woman is wearing a black dress. The master skillfully prescribed each fold on the fabric. It feels like velvet casting blue. Maria’s hat is on her head. It is immediately clear that the girl was a great fashionista and showed it in every possible way in public. A very interesting point is the contrast of the dress and the hat. A modest dress made of expensive fabric, with slightly protruding white cuffs, is more reminiscent of monastic clothing. But the richly decorated, wide-brimmed hat of an interesting, elaborate form completely dissipates the feeling of chastity of the heroine of the picture. As a decoration on her chest, Mary can see a golden pendant of a rhombic shape.
Maria Fedorovna poses for the artist, sitting in an expensive armchair. The artist intentionally painted every detail of the chair to emphasize its value: soft upholstery on the seat and armrests, carved mahogany back. In the background is a garden. Luxurious greenery on the trees contrasts and at the same time emphasizes the stately figure of the lady.
First of all, when you look at the picture, the expression on the face of Maria Andreeva is striking. Her eyes are strong, passionate, strong-willed. Femme fatale. But she taunts - the corners of her mouth are pointing up. These small details, like color contrast, deliberately unsuitable clothes, tell us about the restless nature of the portrait, about her inner struggle. The artist was very good at conveying to us the audience the inner mood of Maria Andreeva, especially during the years of her secret commitment to the Bolsheviks.
