It was created in 1870. It is located in the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art, Serpukhov, Russia.
In this work, once again, Alexey Kondratievich’s boundless love for Russian nature perfectly proved itself. Now his attention has not received the most popular topic in painting - the swamp, especially at night. Obviously, in vain, the viewer understands, looking at a wonderful canvas.
The artist’s brush shows a vast, worrying and breathing space that goes far into pitch darkness. However, part of the panorama illuminates the false moonlight breaking through the night cloudy sky. In its silver-yellowish radiance, a section of stagnant water appears, full of reflections and framed by strokes of reeds, and a hard rocky shore, covered in several places with grass and a small shrub. To the right, closer to the center, smoke spreads - it may be a bonfire, but what kind of prudent person will begin to breed it there? If only he does not want to go unnoticed ... Or is this a sign of a starting fire on peatlands.
At first glance, the restrained color scheme resembles a grisaille, when in art only one color gradient is used to represent all objects. But upon further examination, not only black and transparent ocher tones become visible, but also blue, greenish and blue. Softly prescribed shadows and bright spots of glare on plants give the work volume and amazing authenticity. It is likely that the master made sketches from nature or walked around the depicted area when it gets dark.
The general mood of the work, involuntarily pushes to thoughts not only calm and great, but also about the ghosts wandering around the bolts or the Baskervilles' dogs, although by that time this story had not yet been written by Conan Doyle.
