A magnificent portrait of the famous Russian writer and ethnographer Vladimir Dahl was painted by Vasily Perov in 1872. This was the last year of Dahl’s life, we see an elderly man sitting in an armchair, with many wrinkles and a gray beard. The artist depicted him in such a way that in this withering person we see the whole depth of wisdom and limitless philological knowledge, which is still used by all generations.

Vladimir Dahl sits in a chair with a high back, on it is a warm brown housecoat, in which he spent his home leisure in recent years. A red scarf is laid out on the writer's lap, on which an elderly man carefully laid his hands, crossing his thin long fingers. Dahl's face is thin with hollow cheeks, which is characteristic of old age. The head is covered with gray hair, revealing a prominent forehead. It is impossible to look away from the beard of the writer, as if she covers her chin and then falls to her clothes, awakening in her memory the images of the great sages.

Looking at the portrait, we see the piercing gaze of Vladimir Dahl, his clear, slightly surprised eyes as if looking at us and somewhere a little past, as if looking into the future. Perhaps at this moment he was thinking about a new work, and Vasily Petrov was very successful in capturing this moment.

Despite the relaxed look of the writer, who is conveniently located in an armchair, one feels his readiness and desire to begin his beloved work, to which he devoted most of his life. We see a man who for 12 years, almost every hour, made notes, writing down explanations for one of the words, and thus, compiling for us a valuable explanatory dictionary.
This portrait is recognized as a masterpiece of Russian painting, which depicts one of the great people of Russia.
