The Russian painter V. Perov depicted on the canvas in 1859 a motif from folklore. “The scene on the grave” became an interpretation of the song about crying for the deceased. The picture of Perov depicts 3 main heroines at the grave of a deceased man: mother, sister and wife.
The grave of the deceased is completely fresh, a new wooden cross rises above the mound. You can immediately notice how different the emotional state of mourning women is. Mother is literally heartbroken. She leaned her body against the grave, as if trying to hug a lost son.
To the right of the elderly woman sits a young sister. Her sadness is more restrained and calm. With the passage of time, grief will be dispelled, leaving a place for new events in life. The young widow with the baby does not seem to be sad at all about the loss. Sitting on her husband’s grave, she slyly looks from under a mourning shawl at a soldier walking nearby. Her grief is fake and insincere.
The figures of three women are inscribed in the compositional triangle. Everything around them fades against their background, but also plays a peculiar role in conveying the mood of the picture. Nearby are the old graves. They are abandoned: without crosses, with fading flowers. This image can be understood as an allegory of the transience of time. Long-standing sorrows pass and, with time, are completely forgotten.
The sky in the picture is gloomy, but in some places patches of cloudless sky are visible. This brings positive notes to the overall sad picture.
Serov further emphasized the difference in women's feelings through color. Mother is dressed in the darkest clothes - black and dark blue, her sister is dressed in brown, and the widowed woman is dressed in a white shirt and orange sundress.
"The scene on the grave" is written in the style of realism. This is a great example of genre painting, for which the author was awarded a small gold medal. Located in the Tretyakov Gallery.
