The Moscow icon painter and public figure of the 17th century Simon Ushakov in 1671 painted the next icon "The Old Testament Trinity." The original work of the brush by Andrei Rublev was taken as the basis for constructing the composition.
The arrangement in the center of the picture of the table, the three angels sitting around it, the architectural building in the upper left corner, the tree in the right - these elements are repeated, but the nature of their execution can even be called the opposite.
Trinity Ushakova sits on a background of antique arches and columns, borrowed by the author from the paintings of Veronese. The large tree is devoid of its original iconographic symbolism. It is not ephemeral, but quite real - with a wide dark trunk and a heavy crown; it is difficult to guess the biblical tree of life.
The furniture in the picture is depicted with amazing detail. On the white tablecloth there is an abundance of utensils: silver and gold bowls, plates, glasses. Although the angels are shown in the folded robe traditional for the icons, their faces are depicted in a completely new style.
This is a calm expression of the eyes, devoid of internal hidden emotion, detail and volumetric features. The wings of the angels are also represented in astonishing realism, as if it were not the heavenly creatures sitting on the spiritual council, but the earthly birds perched on a meal.
This reflected the uniqueness of Ushakov’s icons - an attempt to combine the ancient rules of Russian iconography and the new trends in European painting for that time.
Simon Ushakov, using artistic means, brings the Old Testament trinity closer to ordinary people, making it more understandable, accessible, earthly. The author's innovation is in skillfully building the perspectives of antique buildings, furniture also does not seem flat.
Ushakov’s icon has lost its former spiritual context, but another aspect of the world is revealed - its material versatility and beauty.
