The year of creation of the most famous de Hoch canvas is not known for certain. Most often, researchers of the Dutch painter agree that it was 1660.

In “Mistress and maid”, the artist writes a scene from the everyday life of the townspeople in the then Delft-style. In the near future are two figures of medium size in full growth - the venerable age mistress of the house and next to her is a young woman - a servant. An elderly lady sits, holds items for handicrafts in her hands and turns her gaze to the fish for dinner in a copper bucket brought from the market by a maid. The unremarkable actions of the two women are shrouded in peaceful calm, measuredness and contentment of life.

The peculiarity of the painter de Hoch is the ability to miraculously work out in detail the small objects of the canvas. Perfectly laid out tiles in the courtyard, paved ground at the exit of the gate, the bricks of the wall of the house, the foliage of several trees - all this is written with amazing care.

The second distinctive feature of the artist is attracting the attention of the viewer to simple things, presenting them in such a light that you are surprised at the charms not seen earlier in them. The basket at the old woman’s feet shines with sun glare, a neat vase is monumentally beautiful, even a bucket for fish sparkles with a golden tint. The atmosphere is prosperity and cleanliness. The order is in the interior and in the garment of female figures. The mistress is in a snow-white cap and the same apron; the hem of her red skirt is trimmed with gold stripes. The top of the dress is modest black. The maid - with a very neat haircut, in clean shoes with a long toe.

No less patiently worked out the background. He is occupied by a barely noticeable couple on a walk and the top of another beautiful Dutch house. Thus, the artist skillfully combined in the picture canvas the everyday genre of painting and the city landscape.
